Helpful Vocabulary

Reintroduce: Reintroduction is the deliberate release of species into the wild, from captivity or relocated from other areas where the species survives. It usually involves species that are endangered or extinct in the wild. Because reintroduction involves native species that have become (locally) extinct, some prefer the term "re-establishment".

fieldnote journal: A bound notebook that a scientist makes observations in.

survival: The act or process of staying alive.

Extinction: In biology and ecology, extinction is the end of an animal species. The moment of extinction is generally considered to be the death of the last individual of that species (although the ability to breed and recover may have been lost before this point). Because a species' potential range may be very large, determining this moment is difficult, and is usually done retrospectively. This difficulty leads to phenomena such as Lazarus taxa, where a species presumed extinct suddendly "re-appears" (typically in the fossil record) after a period of apparent absence.

species: A group of individuals who have similar characteristics, or qualities. A distinct kind or type.
